Dried eggs offer more benefits compared to raw ones. Let’s quickly highlight what you get when you dehydrate your eggs.

  • Hydrated eggs can have an indefinite shelf life if well prepared and stored. You can keep them for long periods without refrigeration and worry-free.
  • Dried eggs are rich in proteins, immune-boosting properties, antibacterial qualities, and all other nutrients in fresh eggs.
  • Hydrated eggs are essential ingredients for making protein-rich pet foods. They are also easy to digest and offer antioxidants.
  • Hydrated eggs are affordable if you buy them from a food store. That helps you save on the cost of food.
  • Hydrated eggs take less space, making them easy to store or carry around.
  • Dried eggs are the main ingredients in making baked foods and other recipes.

2 Methods to Dehydrate Eggs

Dehydrating eggs is the method of extracting their water content. That lowers the microbial activities that usually make the fresh egg perishable.

You can dehydrate raw eggs or pre-cooked eggs. Either way, you should follow a procedure to reduce their moisture content.

So, what are the steps to dehydrate eggs?

Crack Eggs Open and Whisk Them

The first step in dehydrating eggs is to crack them open. This applies to raw eggs or pre-cooked ones. You can do it using your preferred method. Let’s describe a few ways to do it.

Cracking Eggs On The Countertop

In this method, you will be working on your countertop. So, what do you need? Just collect your eggs and a bowl large enough to accommodate all cracked eggs and give you room to crack them.

Identify the midpoint of the egg when standing upright. It has a weakness around that area where you would draw the equator if it were the earth’s globe.

Grasp the egg, hold it firmly in your hands, and hit it against the countertop. You should time the midpoint and let the egg land squarely on its side on the countertop.

Also, you should be calm and well-composed and let one sharp tap. It is better once than hitting the egg several times, which can shatter the shells.

Once the shell breaks and forms enough crack, use your thumb to press it inwards and separate the shell. That makes it easy to pour the yolk and white into the bowl, separating them from the eggshell.

Hitting Two Eggs Against Each Other

Did you know you can use one egg to break the shell of another without it getting even a crack? It is a mesmerizing physics you can apply to crack eggs. You will need two or more eggs and a bowl.

Hold an egg in each hand and gently hit them against each other at the midpoint or the equator.

The shell of one of the two eggs should crack. Once you have the cracks on the eggshell, press it inwards with your thumb to break it and pour the content into a bowl as you did before.

Using One Hand to Crack an Egg

This method is the most advanced but can be messy if something goes wrong. You can end up with shell pieces in the bowl or untidy hands. Proceed cautiously.

Hold an egg in one hand, such that your thumb and index finger are on one side of the equator. The middle and ring fingers should be on the other side.

Crack the shell by hitting it against the side of the bowl and immediately pull the cracked eggshell apart with your thumb and middle finger.

You may need to practice this method more than once to master it. But if it sounds complicated, you can use the previous options.

Once you break the egg, use a sizable spoon to whisk it. Continue whisking until yolk and white are uniformly mixed.

Method 1: Dehydrate Raw Eggs

This is the most common method. You will need the following to dehydrate raw eggs:

  • Dehydrator
  • Fruit leather sheets
  • Whisked egg yolks and whites
  • Blender, rotary beater, or mortar and pestle.

Dehydrators come with trays. Most manufacturers specify the number of eggs each tray can hold, and the number is typically six. Proceed as follows:

Place the fruit leather on the dehydrator tray and pour your whisked or scrambled raw eggs into it. A thin layer of the beaten egg mixture is preferred for faster drying.

Place the trays into the dehydrator and run it at a temperature of about 135-145 degrees Fahrenheit.

Dehydrate the eggs until they become coarse and dry. Don’t forget to stir every two hours to encourage uniform drying. That can take between 8-18 hours, depending on the dehydrator you are using and the thickness of the egg mixture.

Method 2: Dehydrate Pre-cooked Eggs

This second method requires you to pre-cook the eggs before drying them. Cook the egg mixture just as you would but without onions, tomatoes, or any additives except cooking oil.

You also need to use a spoon to break them into smaller pieces as they cook.

You can start by drying the cooked eggs between paper towels before transferring them to a dehydrator. Put the pre-cooked egg on a flat surface and spread it into an even layer.

Cover it with three layers of paper towel and press manually to remove excess moisture from the cooked scrambled eggs.

You may need to replace the paper towels if they are too soaked to absorb more water. Doing that will reduce the time they take on a dehydrator tray.

Spread the cooked eggs on the dehydrator tray, ensuring they form a single layer.

Run the dehydrator at a temperature setting of about 135-145 degrees Fahrenheit.

Dehydrate the eggs until they become dry. That usually takes 10-12 hours, but it can be less if you dry the eggs under paper towels.

Process them Down Into a Fine Powder with a Blender or a Mortar

This next step applies to both raw and pre-cooked eggs.

Transfer the dehydrated egg pieces into a food processor bowl or blender and blend until they are granulated. It should be as close to powder as possible to make them easily when you need to reconstitute them later.

Alternatively, you can use a mortar and a pestle to grind the dried eggs. This is an equally effective approach though it takes longer to do the task.

Dried and grounded eggs are ready for packaging and storage.

You should let your re-hydrated eggs sit for about five minutes before using them.

Alternatives for Preserving Eggs In General

Dehydrating fresh eggs is the most effective method of preserving eggs for later use. However, alternatives exist. You can also do the following:

  • Freeze eggs
  • Preserve eggs using mineral oil
  • Freeze dry eggs
  • Freeze scrambled eggs
  • Hard boil eggs
  • Use water glass storage
  • Salt eggs
  • Pickle eggs

Wrapping Up

You can preserve the eggs that you have in plenty at some point of the year for later use. Dehydrating is the most efficient method for storing eggs in the long term.

]]>
Wheat berries are delicious and can be used in different recipes. But like other whole grains, they have a definite shelf life that depends on many factors.

The wheat berries storing method plays the most critical part in its shelf life.

How long do wheat berries last, and how can you extend their shelf life? Read on as we explore ways to make your wheat berries last longer while maintaining their nutrient value.

We will give you the best tips and how to use your stored wheat berries.

Wheat Berries Storing and Shelf Life

Wheat Berries Storing and Shelf Life

Ideally, store your wheat in an airtight container in a cool, dry, dark place. The temperature should be between 40 to 60 degrees Fahrenheit, but the cooler, the better.

According to the US Department of Agriculture (USDA), wheat is the most widely consumed grain in the country.

They are eaten in different forms, including whole grains or processed wheat flour for baking.

Wheat berries are intact, whole grains in their natural form. They are packed with many nutrients and are delicious.

Cooked wheat berries have a chewy bite with a subtle, nutty, and earthy taste.

Like all other grains, wheat berries are not available all year round, the reason you may need to store them for future use or when stocking up.

Fortunately, they have a relatively long shelf life if stored properly.

Wheat berries are similar to other heart grains, providing all nutrients any whole grain should have. They have the germ, endosperm, and bran as their nutrient store.

According to the USDA, a quarter cup (48g) of wheat berries has the following nutritional content:

  • Calories: 170
  • Fat: 1.5g
  • Sodium: 0g
  • Carbohydrates: 32g
  • Fiber: 4g
  • Sugars: 0g
  • Protein: 9g
  • Zinc: 2.3mg
  • Iron: 2.2mg
  • Magnesium: 60mg

The shelf life of wheat berries varies depending on the storage conditions. Packaging also plays a significant role in how long your berries will last.

The shelf life of undamaged wheat berries is about six months, but only if stored in an airtight container.

If you keep it in a mylar bag or any other oxygen-free container, it can last over 30 years. The shelf life is one year in a freezer. Compared with other grains, wheat berries have a longer shelf life.

How To Tell If Your Wheat Berries Are Bad?

How To Tell If Your Wheat Berries Are Bad?

Regardless of the storage conditions, wheat berries still have a definite shelf life. Beyond that, they will spoil. It can be confusing to tell a spoiled grain from a fresh one.

Fortunately, there are three ways you can tell if your wheat berries are no longer fit for consumption.

Wheat berries can spoil from oil rancidity, bugs, moisture, and temperature. Use the following signs to know if they are still good or already spoiled:

Check The Date On The Package

If you buy packaged wheat berries from a local food store, the package has information about the estimated expiry date.

Even if you are in a hurry, just take one minute to check it out before adding the item to your cart.

Don’t buy anything whole wheat berries that will expire in a week. Try to get as fresh wheat berries as possible because you may not intend to use them immediately.

You Touch Them and Feel the Surface

Wheat berries should be dry and hard to the touch. If you touch them and feel moist or soggy, they are no longer safe for consumption. That is a sign of mold growth. Just discard the wheat grains.

Smelling The Wheat Berries

Wheat berries are still good if they smell slightly sweet or have no noticeable odor.

But if your berries smell moldy, musty, rancid, or have an odd color or dark spots, it is time to toss them away. They are spoiled and should never be used in any recipe.

Wheat berries can also become stale. Unfortunately, there is no way of knowing that until you taste them, which may be too late.

How To Properly Store Wheat Berries For Maximum Shelf Life?

How To Properly Store Wheat Berries For Maximum Shelf Life?

Storing wheat berries depends on different factors that you should consider at all times to maximize the shelf life.

If you compromise any of them, you may end up with spoiled grains over a shorter time than you anticipated.

  • Pay much attention to the following 4 issues to properly store wheat berries:
  • Best wheat berries for long-term storage
  • Container/pack requirements
  • Ideal storage conditions for wheat: temperature and humidity requirements
  • Control the growth of insects

Let’s dive into the details of each of these factors.

Best Wheat Berries For Long-Term Storage

Wheat berries vary from variety to variety. If you want to successfully store them long-term, invest your time picking the right type.

First, the moisture content should be less than 10%. Wheat berries with higher moisture content can undergo chemical degradation, grow mold, or encourage bacterial growth.

Secondly, you have to consider the intended use after storage. You can choose between red and white wheat.

Red wheat berries are suitable for making flatbreads, cereal, tortillas, and all-purpose flour. On the other hand, white wheat is best suited for pastries, crackers, and cookies.

Lastly, you may consider the nutritional value of the wheat berries. Hard wheat is higher in gluten (naturally occurring protein) than soft wheat.

Container/Pack Requirements

You can store wheat berries in different containers. Your packaging choice will significantly influence the shelf life of the stored content. Consider the following possibilities:

Cans

Cans are the most ideal storage containers for wheat. They are effective if they are sealed from air and moisture.

They also keep rodents and bugs at bay. You won’t have to worry about any damage to the wheat berries, even if you just leave them in the pantry.

If you store your wheat berries in an airtight can in a cool, dry, dark place, they can last for more than 30 years.

Plastic Bucket with Air-Tight Lid

Many homesteaders prefer storing wheat berries in plastic buckets with airtight lids because they are easy to access. However, they are not as effective as other methods.

Water & Airtight Food Storage Containers

  • BPA-Free & Food-Safe: Our flour storage container is made of high-quality polypropylene, a BPA-Free recyclable material that's 100% food-grade. These plastic storage containers with lids are microwave, freezer, and dishwasher safe.

Air can pass through the walls over time, which reduces the shelf life of wheat berries.

If you want to keep your wheat berries in a plastic container with an airtight lid, treat them through the dry ice method (more on this later).

If you store the bucket and its content in a cool, dry, dark place, the wheat berries can last for about 20 years.

However, don’t place it directly on the concrete floor. You can make a wooden stand to raise it about one foot off the floor.

Mylar Bags

Mylar bags are specialized storage containers that shield the content from moisture and oxygen.

Mylar Bags, 30x 400cc Oxygen Absorbers, 30x Labels – Heat Sealable, Food Safe

  • LIGHT & AIR TIGHT - At 5 Mil thickness, Wallaby bags PREVENT light and air penetration. Sell flimsy, thin, and poorly made bags that shouldn't be trusted with long term food storage. Wallaby is trusted for emergency preparedness.

To extend the shelf life of the wheat berries, put an oxygen absorber in the bag to eliminate oxygen initially present in the bag.

Wheat berries stored inside a mylar bag with an oxygen absorber can last for about 25 years. Just put it in a cool, dry, dark place.

You may also want to keep everything inside another rodent-proof container or room. Otherwise, they may ruin your wheat berries.

However, you can extend the shelf life by keeping everything in a secondary container. You can put them in a plastic bucket with an airtight lead.

That makes them last longer and protects the wheat berries from rodents and bugs.

Plastic or PETE Bottles

You might have plastic water or soda bottles lying around the house. Instead of tossing them into a trash can, repurpose them for storing wheat berries. They may not be the best option.

Apart from that, they are excellent in keeping the content moisture and oxygen-free. They are also effective against rodents and bugs.

So, store the glass jar and content in a cool, dry, dark place. Also, ensure the lid is airtight.

Mylar Bag Lined Plastic Bucket

Apart from cans, mylar bag-lined plastic buckets are another effective method of storing wheat berries for a long time.

The mylar bag on the inside of the walls prevents any oxygen and moisture from penetrating. The plastic container deters rodents and bags.

To extend the shelf life even further, consider adding an oxygen absorber in the bag and squeeze as much air as possible out of the bag.

Ideal Storage Conditions for Wheat: Temperature And Humidity Requirements

Ideal Storage Conditions for Wheat: Temperature And Humidity Requirements

Store wheat berries in cool, dry, and dark places. The temperature can range from 40 to 60 degrees Fahrenheit.

You can consider a root cellar or basement as the ideal storage place as they tend to be colder.

Avoid storing wheat berries in hot garages or attics. The high temperatures in these areas will decrease their shelf-life. Wheat berries can survive at room temperature. But the cooler the room, the better.

Control The Growth Of Insects

The most common enemy of wheat berries is insects. If you can control them, your grains can stay fresh for a long time.

Fortunately, there are ways of effectively hindering the growth of insects. They include the following:

Oxygen Absorbers

Bugs that attack wheat berries are also animals that require oxygen to survive. If you want to keep them at bay, make the storage container or bag oxygen-free by adding oxygen absorbers.

Without oxygen for respiration, the insects cannot multiply.

Vacuum Sealing

Vacuum sealing means driving out air from the storage container and making it airtight. You can use a mylar bag or vacuum bag.

But that depends on how long you want to store your wheat grains. Without oxygen in the storage container, bugs suffocate to death.

Dry Ice Treatment

Dry ice (solid carbon dioxide) kills both bugs and their larvae. However, they are not effective against eggs. So, you may use it with other methods.

Freeze/Thaw/Freeze Method

Freezing creates unbearable conditions for insects to survive. Put the wheat berries in a 15-pound moisture-proof container and place them in a freezer for 2-3 days to kill bugs.

Next, allow it to thaw at room temperature for another 24 hours. This encourages eggs to hatch.

The second freezing is to eliminate the newly-hatched larvae. Do that for another 2-3 days before allowing it to return to room temperature for final packaging and storage.

You don’t need to use this method if using mylar bags.

How To Use Wheat Berries

Wheat berries have many uses. They are some of the most flexible foods for long-term storage emergencies or survival.

You can just take them from storage any time to eat them as fresh sprouts, dry and bake, or boil and eat them.

You can also ground them into flour and use them in your baking recipes like bread, pasta, and pastries.

Wrapping Up

You can enjoy wheat berries all year round if you store them properly. They have a shelf life of about 6 months in a pantry if stored in a sealed container or bag and one year in a freezer.

But you can make them even last longer by using mylar bags, oxygen absorbers, and other methods. Just remember to keep them in a cool, dry, dark place.

Kudzu is one of the famous weeds in the Southern United States, known for its prolific invasion and beautiful purple flowers.

Fortunately, Kudzu food is edible. But the big question is, how do you cook and eat them?

Kudzus are available in almost every state in the Southern US. However, you rarely meet them on the table, yet, they are edible.

These are considered a weed in North America but stapes in the south. You can cook, bake, brew, and grind them according to your recipe.

Read on as we explore the nutritional value of Kudzu and recipes you can actually try!

What Are Kudzu?

What Are Kudzu?

Kudzus are some of the most popular plants in the United States that can be found almost everywhere.

The only place where you can rarely find it is on your table, though it can be used in many different recipes.

Kudzus are green, blossoming plants that originated from Japan and China. They were brought to American soil by farmers in 1876 to feed livestock and control soil erosion.

Kudzus found the climate favorable and conquered the Southeastern United States, causing the US Department of Agriculture to recognize them as a weed.

While it is not a staple in the country, most cooks from the Southern regions enjoy making Kudzu dishes. It can be eaten raw, sauteed, baked, jellied, or deep-fried.

Kudzu Identification

Kudzu Identification

Kudzus are identified by their invasive nature. They are green and are growing fast.

You can often see them covering an abandoned barn, climbing trees, spreading across fields, and colonizing everywhere they grow. It can be found from Florida to New Jersey and as far west as Virginia and Texas.

The iconic feature of Kudzu is its beautiful, purple-colored, grape-smelling flowers. The plant becomes very attractive when blossoming.

You can also identify Kudzu by its first growth rate. According to research, they can grow up to 12 inches a day.

That is what makes them invasive. In fact, it is common to come back from your summer vacation to find your driveway covered by this prolific creeper.

Kudzu Uses And Nutritional Content

Kudzu Uses And Nutritional Content

The leaves, flowers, and roots are all edible. The only part of the plant that never gets to the table is the mature stem.

You can use the leaves like spinach, baked in quiches, or cooked like collards. The shoots are soft and taste more like snow peas.

Kudzu’s purple flowers can be used to make delicious jelly, candy, and syrup. Some homesteaders have also used them to make wine.

If you want to get more nutrients, go for the Kudzu’s bulbous roots. You can dry them and grind them into flour, which you can then use to coat foods before frying.

100 g of cooked Kudzu leaves has the following nutritional information:

  • 36 calories
  • 89.0 percent moisture
  • 0.4 g protein
  • 9.7 g total carbohydrate.
  • 7.7 g fiber
  • 0.8 fat
  • 34 mg Ca
  • 20 mg P
  • 4.9 mg Fe
  • 0.03 mg thiamin
  • 0.91 mg riboflavin
  • 0.8 mg niacin

How to Cook and Eat Kudzu?

Kudzu may not be considered a food in many households, but still a great source of emergency or survival meals.

Fortunately, all other plant parts are edible, except the stem. But how do you go about preparing a tasty meal of Kudzu?

You need to harvest Kudzu from the field or buy packaged starchy roots. You can then boil the leaves and flowers or peel the roots as instructed to make jelly, tea, quiche, etc.

Proceed as follows to prepare Kudzu:

Harvesting Kudzu

Many parts of Kudzu are edible, including eaves, flowers, and root tubers. But if you want to harvest Kudzu for your consumption, look for the ones that grow in a safe place.

Avoid Kudzus that grows by the roadside and in waste areas. These may have dust, fumes from the exhaust, and toxic substances.

Also, you need to time the harvesting period right. That depends on the part of the plant you want to harvest.

If you need the flowers, do it between July and September. But if you need the root tubers, the best time to gather them is in the fall or winter. Leaves are best picked in the spring or early summer.

Pick The Blossoms

You will need a pair of garden scissors or shears to cut the thin stalk connecting the flower to the main stem.

Cut each flower at a time and gently add them to your bucket without crushing them.

Also, you will find most of the flowers you need at the base of the plant. So, you won’t need to strain for those high up on the trees.

Pick Up Leaves

Leaves grow directly from the stem. You again need a shear to cut the leaf stalks from the main stem. The tasty and nutritious leaves are the smaller, young-looking, and bright green ones.

Put the leaves into your bucket and avoid crushing them. Also, choose only healthy ones without pests and signs of animal bites.

Dig Up The Roots

Get a shovel and dig up the root tubers near the surface. But if you want a bigger catch, you can go deeper into the ground for tubers that usually weigh over 200 pounds.

You may need hand gloves and garden boots for this purpose.

Wash Kudzu Parts Thoroughly

The first step is to wash them thoroughly with warm water. Ensure you have removed all the stems and other unwanted parts and dirt.

Also, check on the Kudzu bugs. If you are washing roots, you may need a scrub brush to remove any caked dirt on them.

You can eat the leaves raw, but many people boil them first to remove hairs that cover the leaf surface. Bring a pot of water to boil and add the leaves. Boil for about 1 minute before eating or cooking.

Preparing the tips also requires the same procedure as leaves and flowers. The only difference is their nutritional value. They are richer in protein than leaves.

After washing, peel the roots the same way you do with potatoes. You can use a sharp knife or an industrial-grade peeler to peel them.

And what you do next depends on the Kudzu recipe you want to make, which can require you to either shred, roast, pound, or grate the pealed root tubers.

You also grind them into a fine powder, like what you buy from a food store.

8 Kudzu Food Recipes That You Should Know

8 Kudzu Food Recipes That You Should Know

You can prepare a Kudzu snack or drink in different ways. The procedure depends on the desired outcome. You can make many things, including the following:

A Kudzu Stir-fry

A Kudzu stir-fry is one of the quickest meals to make. Proceed as follows:

  • Pour oil into a skillet and heat it up
  • Add garlic cloves, tamari, bok choy, ginger, and Kudzu powder.
  • Pour a quarter cup of water or more, depending on the quantity you want to prepare.
  • Cook on low heat for five minutes or until bok choy is fully cooked.

Fried Kudzu Leaves

Making fried Kudzu leaves is also as simple as a Kudzu stir-fry. Follow these steps:

  • Harvest fresh Kudzu leaves and then wash them clean.
  • Use water and flour to make the batter and your preferred seasoning
  • Heat some oil in a skillet
  • Dip the Kudzu leaves into the batter and put them in the hot oil.
  • Fry on both sides until crispy and remove from oil.
  • Dry your crisp between paper towels and serve when warm.

Making Kudzu tea is straightforward. You can do it in the following steps:

  • Add water to a kettle or saucepan and put it over the kettle on a stove.
  • Heat to boil and stir in Kudzu powder or Kudzu leaves
  • Use a strainer to filter out the plant material and allow it to cool.
  • You can customize the taste with a sprig of mint.

A Kudzu Quiche

To make a Kudzu quiche, you need the following ingredients:

  • 3 eggs
  • 1 cup heavy whipping cream
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • A pinch of ground pepper
  • 1 cup grated mozzarella cheese
  • 1 cup chopped Kudzu leaves

Mix all the ingredients in one bowl and then add an unbaked pie shell and bake for about 40 minutes. Remove from heat and let cool.

A Blossom Jelly

  • Harvest Kudzu flowers and rinse them in cold water.
  • Transfer the washed flowers into a bowl and add a cup of hot water for every cup of Kudu flower.
  • Cool the bowl and its content in a refrigerator for eight hours.
  • Strain and discard the flowers.
  • Mix one tablespoonful of lemon juice and a package of pectin with the resulting Kudzu flower liquid
  • Bring to a boil and add sugar to taste. Stir to ensure all sugar crystals dissolve.
  • Remove from heat and serve when hot.

A Pudding

To make a Kudzu pudding, you need the following:

  • 1 can of coconut milk
  • 2 tablespoons of maple syrup
  • 1 tablespoon of lime zest
  • ¼ cup of lime juice
  • 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract
  • ¼ teaspoon salt

Mix all the ingredients in a saucepan and put over medium heat, and simmer. Add 3 tablespoons of Kudzu powder and let it thicken.

Pour into the cups to cool. You can top up with baked, chopped pistachios.

A General Thickener

A Kudzu powder can be used as a general thickener. Add about one and a half tablespoonfuls of Kudzu powder into one cup of the liquid to be thickened. You can increase the quantity depending on your preferred texture.

Whisk the liquid until all the clumps are broken down. You can put the mixture in a saucepan and heat it to quicken the process.

Fun Facts About Kudzu

Kudzus are prolific creepers that can colonize an area over a short time. There is no one with firsthand experience of this than residents of the Southern United States.

Some people have even shared their stories of coming from summer vacation to find their cars and homes covered by Kudzu.

Kudzus can grow a foot long a day. If you sit in your backyard for many hours, the plant will cover your foot.

Producing your own food, whether it’s planting veggies or rearing poultry, is incredibly rewarding.

However, home growers and DIY foodies frequently struggle with the process of preserving those commodities.

Canning is one of the most satisfying ways to store food for later use, yet it isn’t difficult or expensive to accomplish.

Simply said, canning is the act of preserving fruits, vegetables, jams, stews, and other foods by sealing them in an airtight container, most commonly a mason jar.

You can reduce the spread of germs and other hazardous microbes by heating food containers and then boiling canned goods. Canned foods can be kept for one to five years longer with this method.

Now you have an idea of the importance of canning for food preservation. The canning process often involves the use of many basic tools, some of which we will list and provide details on in this article.

Benefits Of Home Food Canning

Benefits Of Home Food Canning

Canning food at home is a safe and satisfying procedure that is regaining popularity as food costs rise and people recognize the importance of safeguarding their food supplies.

Home canning is a great way to improve your intake of local foods by preserving food.

Eating locally necessitates eating foods in season, and canning allows you to capture the bounty of any particular crop in season and increase its availability year-round.

To guard against germs, bacteria, mold, and yeast, canning affects food chemically by modifying moisture, pH, or salinity levels.

It also reduces the activity of dietary enzymes. The physical barriers of glass jars, seals, and lids, together with these chemical processes, efficiently prevent deterioration.

Canner

  • Constructed of warp-resistant heavy-gauge aluminum for fast, even heating; Works on regular and smooth-top ranges; Extended 12-year limited warranty

You can use one of two main types of canners.

Water bath canners are the most common and frequently appear to be the least intimidating to someone who is new to canning.

This type of canner resembles a large stockpot with a bottom rack that holds the jars in place and prevents them from colliding and breaking.

High acid items such as fruits, pickles, salsa, tomatoes, applesauce, and jelly are canned in a water bath canner.

A pressure canner is more complicated, with a vent, sealing ring, and pressure gauge, which allows it to shut tightly and cook at a higher temperature.

Due to this, you can safely eat food items like meat, broth and vegetables that have been known to have low acidity.

It should also be noted that if these food items are not canned at this proper temperature, it can harbor bacteria that can cause serious health issues.

As for food items with high acidity, it is preferred that you use a water bath canner since it’s so much faster and easier.

Getting a canner often depends on your budget and preferences but here are some recommendations:

Canning jars, lids

Ball Glass Mason Jar with Lid and Band, Regular Mouth, 12 Jars

Jars for home canning come in a variety of forms and sizes. Choose canning jars that are suitable for the goods you’ll be preserving.

Choose canning jars that are affordable, useful, and well constructed if you plan on storing your preserved goods in your pantry for yourself.

If you plan to give some of the things as gifts, you might want to use more decorative canning jars.

A one-piece lid is used on some canning jars, while a two-piece lid/band solution is used on others. There are also reusable canning lids that can be reused. Use the appropriate sized lid for your canning jar.

Jar bands and rims

Ball Jars Wide Mouth Lids & Bands, 12 Lids and Bands

Canning lids are thin metal lids with a rubber seal that fits on top of the jar and seals the jars once they’ve been canned.

Jar bands are ring-shaped and used to secure the canning lid during the canning process.

When you buy new jars, they usually include both canning lids and bands. However, as you can more jars, you’ll need to purchase more lids and jar bands.

Jar lifter

Ball® Secure-Grip Jar Lifter (by Jarden Home Brands)

Lifting glass jars in and out of boiling water is necessary for canning. Even the prospect of using pasta tongs, oven mitts, or your bare hands to lift jars is enough to persuade you to invest in a jar lifter.

A jar lifter is useful for lifting your food jars into and out of the canner and sanitizing the jars before getting started.

The Wooden spoon is an essential tool required for Mixing and Stirring during the canning process.

If you’re canning your own fruits or vegetables, you’ll need to use a wooden spoon to stir the contents of the pot.

This is because metal can react with the acid in the fruit or vegetable, affecting the taste. A wooden spoon won’t react with the acid, so it’s the best tool for stirring.

Canning funnel

Norpro Stainless Steel Wide-Mouth Funnel w/ Handle, Silver (1 EA)
  • Wide mouth: 5.5"/14cm. Stem: 2.25"/5.5cm
  • This high quality stainless steel funnel can transfer both liquids and solids between containers. It's wide mouth is large enough for sugar, flour, and grains like rice to flow through. A big helper in the kitchen!
  • Works great with wide mouth canning jars! Wide stem opening allows large food items to pass through easily when packaging wide mouth canning jars.

It’s messy and not very pleasurable when you have to scoop a hot brine or tomato sauce into a small opening 10-15 times in a row.

Making the opening of your jar bigger can make canning so much easier.

A canning funnel keeps the food from running down the sides of the jar and into the jar. There are sizes for 2.25″ standard neck jars and 2.75″ wide mouth jars.

I advocate utilizing stainless steel funnels when working with boiling temperatures, such as spicy sauces and jams.

They are more resistant to greater temperatures than plastic funnels.

It’ll come in handy for everything from boiling jelly filling to making Mason jar salads. A clean jar rim goes a long way toward maintaining a solid lid-to-jar seal, so it’s must-have canning equipment.

Pro Tips For Beginners When Canning Food

Pro Tips For Beginners When Canning Food

● Choose the right jars: Canning jars, often known as mason jars, come in a variety of shapes and sizes. Each size and shape is more suited to different kinds of the canning process and different kinds of canned produce.

● Buy new lids: New lids don’t require heating to activate the sealing compound before being placed on the jar top.

● Choose a good pressure canner: A pressure canner or pressure cooker is required for low acid items like meats, seafood, and non-brined vegetables like green beans, carrots, asparagus, and beets.

● Clean jars and lids: Wash and sterilize the jars, then keep them hot in a pot of boiling water until you’re ready to fill them. The dishwasher has also been known to be capable of handling this task in place of the boiling water.

● Checking for cracks/chips: Only utilize jars that are free of cracks or nicks.

● Keeping an even temperature: The canning jars should be kept at high temperature (preferably in boiling water) until it is time to pour the food item in.

● Space between the top of the product in the jar: When filling the jars, don’t go all the way to the top. This is known as “head space,” and it varies by the recipe (1/4 inch or 1/2 inch). If you overfill the jars, the food may interfere with the sealing material on the lids, causing your jars to leak.

● Removing air bubbles: Get rid of any bubble observed in the canning jar with the use of a proper bubble remover tool.

The Final Sentences

Consider canning to be a style of cooking. Instead of making a single meal for immediate enjoyment, you’re preparing food that will last for months! Why are you doing this?

Because canning allows you to preserve the best flavors of the season so you can enjoy them all year! Consider the incredible flavor of garden-fresh tomato sauce in the dead of winter.

Can you make soap at home without lye? Is lye such a crucial ingredient in a soap-making recipe that there is no workaround? Yes. You can make soap without having to handle lye.

Lye is a crucial ingredient in the soap-making process. It is what reduces fat to make soap. Without it, there can never be any soap.

So, how can you make soap without handling this chemical? Continue reading to find out the 6 easy steps to make olive oil soap without lye!

Can You Make Soap Without Lye?

Can You Make Soap Without Lye?

Yes and no. Lye (sodium hydroxide or potassium hydroxide) is an essential ingredient in soap making.

Without it, there is no way you can make any soap. This chemical reacts with fats through a saponification process to form soap.

Making soap from scratch requires that you handle lye. But if you don’t want to interact with it, you can make your soap from soap bases.

These are half-baked soaps where the lye part has been handled for you, and all you need to do is add your preferred additives for custom-made soap.

Lye is a concentrated solution that can cause severe burns to the skin, eyes, lungs, and digestive system.

It can result in permanent damage or even death in some cases. That is why some people are not comfortable handling it.

Making soap from scratch will require that you handle lye. However, some people don’t want to store the chemical in their homes. Of course, safety is first, especially where kids are involved.

But if you want to make an all-natural soap, you don’t have to worry about lye. This chemical will not be present in the final product if you use the right recipe and follow all the steps.

It is all used up in the process of making soap. So, your product will be as natural as it sounds.

How To Make Olive Oil Soap Without Lye?

How To Make Olive Oil Soap Without Lye?

Making soap without lye is easy because the riskier steps have been handled. The rest are easy and safe to handle, even with kids.

You begin from a soap base and customize it with additives of your choice for preferred color and scent.

You can make olive oil soap without handling lye in size steps. This method is called melt and pour, as we will explain here.

Olive Oil Soap Recipe: Things You Will Need

The soap-making success depends on the materials, tools, equipment, and ingredients. You can make any type of soap you want. But in this guide, we will categorically outline the steps of making olive oil soap.

Assemble the following:

  • Soap base (unscented)
  • Olive oil and other additives
  • Pot or double boiler
  • A wooden spoon
  • A bowl
  • Heat source
  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • Non-serrated knife and cutting board or grater for cutting your soap base
  • Silicone spatulas or spoons for stirring
  • Soap mold (depends on your choice)

The soap base you buy for this process depends on your preference. But since you are making an olive oil soap, unscented is preferred. You can buy these from Amazon or a craft store.

6 Steps To Make Olive Oil Soap Without Lye

6 Steps To Make Olive Oil Soap Without Lye

You should now get down to the real business if you have everything ready. Your soap will be made in the following six steps:

Step 1: Grate Unscented

Grate about 8 ounces of the unscented soap base. You can grate as many as you can, but it is better to start with a small test if it is your first time. A cheese grater or a food processor works well for grating.

But if you don’t have a grater, you can also use a knife and a chopping board. Cut the soap base into small cubes of about 1 inch in size. That is to quicken the melting process, as we will see in the next step.

Step 2: Melt Soap

A double boiler is preferred for melting the grated soap base because only mild heat gets to the soap. But you can also use a regular pot though you should continuously stir it to avoid burning the soap.

Other alternatives for melting the soap base are microwave or a mason jar. If you opt for a microwave, put it to the lowest heat settings.

In the other method, put the grated pieces into a mason jar and heat over a pan on low heat.

Regardless of the approach, heat the soap base pieces until they melt. The time it takes depends on the sizes and methods used.

Step 3: Add Olive Oil, Color, And Other Additives

This is where the fun is and what most DIY soap makers enjoy the most. This is the step where you add your colorants and scents according to your taste.

Start with half a teaspoonful of olive oil and each additive for one pound of soap base. You can then increase it gradually to your satisfaction. Do this in the bowl and increase the quantity as necessary.

What other additives can you add to your custom-made soap? Apart from olive oil, which is our primary ingredient, you can also consider the following:

  • Oatmeal
  • Honey
  • Dried herbs
  • Dried flower petals
  • Fragrance or essential oil
  • Soap dyes, food coloring, natural colorants

If using herbs, grind them into fine powder for a fine texture. It also makes your final product feel smooth on the skin.

Essential Oil for Diffuser, Massage, Soap Candle Making

  • Uses; these natural and pure essential oils can be added in a diffuser or humidifier, to create an inviting and cozy space, like living room, yoga, office, and car; you can also use them for massage, spa, skin and hair care, home cleaning and air freshening
  • Homemade Scented Products; with distinct floral aromas, these aromatherapy essential oils can also be used to make scented candles, soaps, bath bombs, body butter, or your very own natural essential oil perfume sprays; besides, they are a good partner for other aromatherapy diffuser oils to make essential oils blend

Step 4: Mix Thoroughly And Pour Into Your Mold

Stir the molten soap base and additives mixture thoroughly until everything looks even.

Pour the resulting product into your molds to shape the soap. Once again, the mold you use depends on your preference. You can buy what you like from Amazon or custom-made some at home.

Step 5: Allow To Cool For Several Hours Before Unmolding

After transferring your soap into the molds, you can choose to insulate them or not. Insulated soap appears darker with a more transparent top.

An uninsulated soap will have a lighter soap with an opaque finish.

You can insulate your soap by covering and wrapping it in a towel. Once done, let the soap cool for 2 days.

We know that is a long wait for first-timers, but you should be patient not to ruin what you have labored to make.

Step 6: Remove The Soap Bars From The Mold

After two days, your soap is cooled and ready for use. Remove the mold and give it the first test. We recommend doing it with a rug to verify if it is effective.

4 Facts About Soap That We Didn’t Know

4 Facts About Soap That We Didn’t Know

Now that you have made soap, do you mind knowing a few facts about it? We briefly discuss soap in the following sections:

History

The history of soap is clouded with myths and misconceptions. There is no clear information on how it was first discovered, with many believing it all happened by accident.

Discovering soap dates thousands of years ago. Accidentally, oil from a cooking pot fell on an ash puddle underneath.

The new substance puzzled the cook, who started recreating it again. Since then, scientists have perfected it into what we know today as highly effective and fragrant soaps.

Name

Soap got its name from another theory that explains how it was discovered. It was an ancient Roman legend of Mount Sapo who named it.

In this theory, the rain washed down animal fat and ashes down the mountain that would form a mixture at the base of Mount Sapo. The resulting substance made cleaning easier.

Ingredients

Soap making requires two main ingredients, which are fat and lye. Animal fat or plant oil can do, and lye is concentrated sodium hydroxide or potassium hydroxide. You also need water to dilute the lye.

Development process

The soap-making process involves a chemical reaction between fat and lye through saponification. The result is an all-natural material with a grease cleaning effect.

FAQs

Who Discovered Soap?

The first soap was invented by Babylonians around 2800 B.C. They discovered that mixing animal fat with ash could create a new substance that made cleaning easier. The first soap was used to wash wool in the textile industry.

Can you use baking soda instead of lye to make soap?

Yes. Sodium bicarbonate (baking soda) can be used instead of lye when making organic homemade soap. However, this product influences the lathering process. So, you won’t get a soft concoction needed to enjoy laundry. In other words, the cleaning effect of soap is reduced.

Is lye a natural product?

No. The lye (sodium hydroxide or potassium hydroxide) is a chemical. However, you don’t have to worry about it because it is not in the soap. It is all used up during the saponification process. The final product is natural.

Can I make soap and sell it?

Yes. If you have all the essential tools needed in the soap-making process, you can start your own company to make soap and sell it.

Some Thoughts

You cannot make soap from scratch without the lye, but you can skip handling it using the melt and pour method.

In this method, you start from a soap base and add the additives and colorants according to your preference. It is still fun, but you miss basic steps in the soap-making process.

3 Steps To Build A Cinder Block Grill

3 Steps To Build A Cinder Block Grill

Choosing a cinder block for your outdoor grill might be one of the best choices you make.

Not only is this option cost-effective, but it also has a long lifespan, great durability and resistance as well as ease of customizability.

The steps involved in building a cinder block grill include:

Step 1: Design & Dimension

Cinder block grills are well known for their customizability, meaning you can easily adapt the design to suit your taste.

There are three main types of cinder block grill designs, and they include:

  1. Basic cinder block grill:

This is basically a grill made with cinder blocks. It is often placed in a fixed area as it cannot be moved. Sometimes, normal bricks can be mixed with cinder blocks to build this.

It has a pretty simple design, but it is still durable to last you for several years. It can also be used with both charcoal and wood fuel.

  1. Square Wood-Fired Concrete Grill:

The wood-fired concrete grill design is one you can build with twenty-two 8 by 8 inches cinder blocks, four-half concrete blocks, metal sheet, angle bar and seven flat bricks.

As the name implies, it is often square shaped and usually fuelled by wood.

  1. Hibachi-Style Open Grate Concrete Grill:

This open grate concrete grill design offers a compact and sophisticated aesthetic with a beautiful rectangular basin and gorgeous, traditional ornamental embellishments on the sidewalls.

Make sure you’re building the model on a flat, firm, compressed surface, just like you would any other cinder block or red brick unit. It can be used with both charcoal and wood fuel.

Step 2: Pick A Site And Clear Area

Step 2: Pick A Site And Clear Area

A cinder block grill is a fixed structure, so you will be unable to move it anyhow you like. This is why it is important to pick the best spot to install it in.

When building a cinder block grill, the main factors to consider are safety and wind.

Ensure that the surface is a completely flat one that will make it easier to install the grill. The grill should be kept away from flammable materials like loose debris, garden mulch or trash.

The grill should not be constructed under a low-lying tree and should be kept at least 10 feet from your home.

However, some communities with strict fire safety guidelines may require you to place the grill at least 20 feet away from any structure.

Determine the wind direction in the spot you choose to avoid having the smoke from your grilling disturbing the guests, cook or your neighbors.

Due to the carbon monoxide content of these smokes, it is important to avoid too much inhalation that can harm you or anyone else.

Step 3: Build It

The steps involved in building a cinder block grill depend mainly on the type of design you plan to go with.

Based on each design, we will give detailed instructions on building your cinder block grill.

Basic cinder block grill

As the name implies, this design is a basic one that can take less than 10 minutes to complete.

Firstly, get 6 cinder blocks of standard size to make the main structure of the grill. Stack them to make a 2 layers tall 3-sided unit.

In order to prevent heat loss, you should try to get some half-blocks to properly join the grill at each corner and build the structure with no holes.

After making the bottom layers, place the cooking rack on the second level and pin the grate in position with some flat cinder blocks.

And when you are ready, you can place the wood or charcoal under the grilling rack to start cooking some delicious meals.

Johnson Level & Tool CS10 Professional Easy-Read Steel Carpenter Square

Johnson Level & Tool CS10 Professional Easy-Read Steel Carpenter Square, 8" x 12", Silver, 1 Square
  • FRAMING SQUARE: The forged tip of this construction tool allows for optimum contact and a firm grip; eliminating stripping. It's great for measuring inside or outside the square; as well as checking table saw adjustments.
  • CONSTRUCTION: This lightweight steel square is made of high-quality steel; ensuring optimum durability. As a result; it can survive even the most severe worksite damage. This tool is finished with a low-glare; anti-rust powder coating.
  • GRADUATIONS: This measuring gauge has easy-to-read 1/8" graduations and numbers that are EZ Read thermal bonded. It's ideal for laying out and identifying patterns in roofing; framing; stairway work; etc.

Square Wood-Fired Concrete Grill

Start by leveling the ground in the preferred location for the grill. This is necessary to ensure that the foundation is properly erected and does not lean or slant after erection.

Use about 7 standard cinder blocks to construct the bottom level of the structure.

Make sure each side of your second level has a half-block on the front. This permits you to arrange the remaining full-length cinder blocks so that the joints are offset from the joints of the bottom layer’s bricks.

This straightforward procedure produces a significantly stronger and more long-lasting wall than it would otherwise be.

After finishing these 2 layers, add the mesh metal surface to the structure and place the angle iron or bar in front of it.

Ensure that you include a third layer of cinder blocks to keep the mesh grid in place.

Hibachi-Style Open Grate Concrete Grill

Start by digging a shallow trench in your preferred site, then fill the trench with crushed stones and metal rebar. These stones are used to create proper drainage for the grill. Next, pour some concrete mix on the rocks.

Once this wet concrete solidifies, you will have a one-level concrete slab to serve at the proper foundation of your cinder block grill.

On top of this concrete slab, you can construct a clean rectangular unit by stacking cinder blocks and filling the gaps between each brick with mortar or wet concrete.

Smooth down the filler with a hand or pointed trowel to give the entire unit a neat, professional appearance.

This design encourages you to incorporate a trendy sink into the unit, which you may achieve by making a mold or template out of wood and connecting it to the grill’s top.

Wet concrete should be mixed and poured into the wooden frame. When this liquid dries and settles, it will look like a beautiful farmhouse sink.

Attach some steel rebars across the hole in the middle of the top section: these bars will offer essential support for the fire bricks that will line the sink’s sides.

Once you’re pleased with the unit’s structural stability, cover the cinder block construction with stucco or concrete to give it a more modern appearance.

Not only is building a cinder block grill inexpensive, but it also provides a durable and customizable grill for you to cook some delicious meals for your family and friends.

This project is definitely worth your time and effort if you want to prepare a delicious barbecue or grilled chicken for your friends.

This grill is also well known for its long lifespan that will ensure it serves you for several years.

Wishing you success in building your incredible cinder block grill.

If you live off the grid, then you probably know what an outhouse is. In fact, an outhouse might just be what you need to be completely independent.

If you are just starting to live off the grid, you might find that an outhouse will save you septic system installation costs.

Even though outhouses have been in existence for a long time, they are not very popular. However, they are still being used for several reasons.

First, they last very long and will have very little or no odor, with proper maintenance. They are also comfortable and easy to build.

Before you build an outhouse, there are several factors that you should be aware of.

Our post provides you with important information regarding the design, depth, location, and other important factors of outhouse holes.

After this, you should have a deep knowledge of all factors pertaining to outhouses. Let’s get started.

Outhouses and how they Work

Outhouses and how they Work

An outhouse is simply a small structure, normally separate from your main building. It usually covers a certain toilet.

You will find that the toilets that are inside outhouses are bucket toilets, pit latrines, or even dry toilets.

An outhouse hole is the hole on which the outhouse structure sits on. Any waste goes in this hole, where it can decompose.

After decomposition, or after the hole becomes full, you will find that some people will choose to reuse it as fertilizer, or simply get rid of it in other ways.

Outhouses work in a very simple way. The outhouse will provide shelter for the pit latrine. This is where humans will go to relieve themselves.

The hole will collect the feces so that the environment is left clean without defecation. It also aids in reducing spread of certain diseases.

You will find that these structures have certain holes that will help to aerate the structures. As a result, there are no foul smells. In case the smell increases, lime is added to reduce it significantly.

Outhouse Hole: Location, Design, Depth, and Other Things

Outhouse Hole: Location, Design, Depth, and Other Things

Anyone can build an outhouse. However, there are different types of outhouses. There are some that are better than others.

For you to create a great outhouse hole, you have to consider and integrate some factors including the location, design, depth, and others. In this section, we will discuss these important factors.

Outhouse Hole Location

Outhouse Hole Location

You do not want your outhouse to affect or contaminate your drinking water.

Therefore, we would recommend that your outhouse be around 100 feet away from water sources including streams, lakes, and wells.

At the same time, the outhouse should be situated on a high spot. That way, when it rains, the water will not fill the surface.

In case you do not have such a location, then you need to create a soil berm that will prevent the water from going inside.

The outhouse pit, or latrine, should be around 100 yards downwind, as well as down gradient from food facilities.

It should also be around 100 feet from the water sources you have around you. There will be very low chances that the outhouse will affect the quality of water from such a distance.

Outhouse Hole Design

There are different designs for outhouse designs. They are different in regards to simplicity and appearance.

Before you start the construction of an outhouse, you should decide the number of seats you require, and decide if you will separate your stalls.

In regards to the weather, you can choose to build one with a screen front, which would be great during summers. But when winter comes, it will not do much good.

Remember that there is a possibility a parent might accompany his or her child. In that case, it should be big enough to accommodate both.

Most of the outhouses have rectangular shapes. However, the sizes might vary based on comfort. It is also possible to have a hole over which you will squat. It can also have a set that you sit on.

It is important that you have some form of ventilation and adequate tools such as toilet papers. Hand sanitizers are also recommended as part of the designs.

There are certain safety issues that you should address. The depth of the hole is really important.

Tapeworms are known to move through soil up to five feet in any way.

Therefore, if the hole is around five feet, they will get to the surface and will easily be contracted by those near you, including people and pets.

It is also important to have a level area. You have to ensure that you are not reclined at an angle. Make sure the area is at a nice level.

As for the depth and width, there is no restriction on them. However, it should be greater than two feet by 2 feet. If you want a two-seater, then 4 feet by 5 feet will be great.

The depth should be six feet or more. That way, everything that goes down the pit will remain down there.

Outhouse Hole Number

There are certain outhouses that have multiple holes. Some had two, while others had even three. You have to decide if you want to have more than one holes.

But it is important to consider the number of people that are in your family, or the number of people who will use it. If you have a larger family, then a two-hole outhouse will be suitable for you.

Why does some have more than one? Well, people might assume that it was meant for use by multiple people at a go, which is not the case.

The additional holes allowed for the waste to be distributed in the box under the holes. That meant that it could last a lot longer without filling up.

Outhouse Hole Liner

Pits often have linings. This is an important addition to the outhouse hole. In case the pit does not stand by itself, the lining will stop it from caving inwards.

For this purpose, you can use a range of materials including drums.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why do some outhouses have two holes?

Two holes in an outhouse allow the outhouse to be used for longer before filling up, especially when it is meant for large families. When there are two holes, the waste will be distributed well.

Why do some people put a moon on outhouses?

In the past, supposedly, before the symbols of male and female bathrooms were used, people would add a moon to show women’s outhouses, and a sun for the male outhouses.

How to find an old outhouse location?

It is easy to find a location where an outhouse was, even if the outhouse structure is not there anymore. We recommend that you check for any landmarks that might symbolize its existence, or simply look for a dip located in the ground.

Can cornstarch be an odor killer?

Cornstarch is quite similar to baking soda in that it is ground finely. That makes it absorbent. That means it will deal with the unpleasant odors with ease, even in shoes.

For that reason, we have prepared this post to take you through the entire process of dehydrating sour cream.

We have compiled a list of five easy-to-follow steps that will help you prepare some powdered or dehydrated sour cream. Let’s get started.

Why Would I Dehydrate Sour Cream?

Why Would I Dehydrate Sour Cream?

You might be wondering what reasons there are for dehydrating sour cream. It is a good idea to understand the reasons for dehydrating sour cream.

In this section, we will be discussing the reasons for dehydrating sour cream.

First, you can dehydrate sour cream to use in other recipes. Sour cream has an amazing flavor and taste, which you can take advantage of when in powder form.

You can easily add the powdered cream to your recipes to add that flavor.

Additionally, dehydrated sour cream will be reduced in volume. So, instead of storing your sour cream in its other form, you can easily dehydrate it and save more of your space.

When you store sour cream, it will only last a short while, probably a couple of weeks. However, when it is in dehydrated form and is stored properly, it will last a lot longer, more months.

We all know that emergencies can come when you do not expect. In such times, it would be better if you had a good source of food at hand. That is what dehydrated sour cream will provide for you.

You can save much more money with sour cream when in dehydrated form. Purchasing in bulk and dehydrating it will help save several dollars.

When you are able to do this yourself, there is a sort of pleasure that you will get from it. There are many more reasons why you should dehydrate sour cream and we recommend them.

5 Basic Steps to Dehydrate Sour Cream

5 Basic Steps to Dehydrate Sour Cream

Dehydrating sour cream is very easy, especially if you will do it the right way.

It is important that you learn all the steps for dehydrating sour cream so that the results are satisfactory. In general, there are a total of five, very easy-to-follow steps that you should follow.

  • Step 1: Preparing The Sour Cream
  • Step 2: Preparing The Trays
  • Step 3: Spread Sour Cream To A Thin Layer
  • Step 4: Dehydrate At 130 To 140 Degrees
  • Step 5: Make Dehydrate Sour Cream Into More Powdery Texture

Let’s get started on the steps.

Step 1: Preparing the Sour Cream

The first thing you want to do is to ensure that the sour cream is at its best state.

You can do this by stirring it properly so that it becomes creamy and lighter. The reason for this step is to ensure that it is easier to work with the sour cream.

Once stirred properly, the sour cream will become easier to spread on the tray.

Wilton Easy Layers Sheet Cake Pan

Wilton Easy Layers Sheet Cake Pan, Rectangle Sheet Pan, 2-Piece Baking Sheets Set, Steel
  • Ready, Set, Bake: Wilton has the perfect baking sheets for oven set to help you make your favorite foods. Make a layered sheet cake with ease using one baking sheet.
  • Versatile Bakeware: With the Wilton baking pans, you can stack cakes between a layer of delicious buttercream mouse or fruit filling. Bake another batch of 2 cake layer cakes with this steel pan..
  • Non-Stick Baking: The durable non-stick and scratch-resistant coating on our cookie sheets allows your food to slide or pop out easily, making cleanup easy. Each non-stick baking sheet coating is made up of nontoxic silicone polyester.

Step 2: Preparing the Trays

You have some trays on which the sour cream will be dehydrated. We do not recommend that you use the sour cream on the trays if they are uncovered.

Use some baking sheets or a plastic wrap to cover the trays properly. Make sure the trays are completely covered

Step 3: Spread Sour Cream to a Thin Layer

Step 3: Spread Sour Cream to a Thin Layer

After you spread the baking sheets or plastic wrap on the trays, put a couple spoonfuls of the sour cream in the middle of the trays and spread them to a very thin layer.

Do not fill more than half of the tray’s depth with the layer. Try your best to make the layer as even as possible.

Note: For best drying, the thickness of the sour cream on the sheet should be less than ¼ of an inch.

Step 4: Dehydrate at 130 to 140 Degrees

Make sure that there are no folds of the plastic wrap that are over your sour cream.

Once you are sure everything is set, put your tray in a dehydrator and set it to around 130 to 140 degrees Fahrenheit.

If the temperature goes higher than that, the sour cream will become brown and it will change to a dry texture.

Note: The temperature of the dehydrator should be set as low as possible.

Additionally, the amount of time it will take for the sour cream to dry will depend on the amount being dried, as well as the humidity levels, temperature, and altitude.

Once it is complete, the sour cream should be brittle and it should have changed color to a yellow ting, not the original bright white.

Step 5: Make Dehydrated Sour Cream into More Powdery Texture

At this point, the sour cream is still not in powder form. To turn it to a powder form, you should start by putting it inside a food processor.

But the food processor will simply break it down, not turn it to powder. If you have a blender, use it to turn it to a more powdery form.

For the best results with the blender, try blending a small amount at a go.

How to Store and Use Dehydrated Sour Cream?

How to Store and Use Dehydrated Sour Cream?

Once done turning to powder, place it in jars and store in a fridge or a freezer depending on what you have planned.

When you freeze it, it will remain in great condition for a while. You can thaw it out when you need to.

Powdered or dehydrated sour cream is a great addition to recipes. You can add sour cream powder to muffins, dips, sauces, potatoes, cakes, or casseroles,…

It provides that amazing flavor of sour cream to your food and will add a certain creaminess to recipes that need sour cream. The fat is not part of the powdered cream.

Therefore, it will not transform to the normal creamy form used for nachos or tacos.

We thought making pioneer candy recipes would be a fun summer hobby — and it was!

We produced old-fashioned rock candy and pioneer taffy. It took a while to prepare but it was worth the time. These pioneer candies are ideal when living with children at home.

We’ll share our expertise in producing pioneer different candies for your kids in this post.

8 Pioneer Candy Recipes For Your Children

8 Pioneer Candy Recipes For Your Children

Back before there were 15 different brands of peanut butter, pickle-flavored chips, and chocolate bars that looked like patio furniture. Pioneer candy was literally candy plus a side of country charm.

When you hear the word candy, what thoughts come to mind? Sweet, sugarcoated treats might be some of your first associations.

However, some candies are not so obvious in appearance. These “candies” were some of the earliest treats given to children during pioneer times.

Caramel Apples Candy

Caramel Apples Candy

In America’s history, apples were one of the most prevalent fruits. Everything including vinegar and cider to pies and sweets was made with them.

An apple covered in caramel and then rolled in almonds was a particular favorite.

Materials You’ll Need To Make Caramel Apple Candy

  • 16-ounce package of caramel candies (the pioneers created this from scratch by melting sugar and cooking it until it caramelized, but we’ll make it safe and easy).
  • 6 apples (except Grannie Smiths, which are better for cooking in general).
  • 2 cups crushed nuts (any sort) or a nut combination
  • 6 Popsicle-sticks or 6 twigs with one end stripped of bark and polished to a point.

Instructions To Make Caramel Apple Candy

Step 1: By the stem, insert the sticks into the apple’s middle.

Step 2: Melt the caramel candy in a double boiler, stirring regularly until smooth.

Step 3: Move the cover of the dual boiler to the countertop using a hot pad, then roll and twirl the apples in the caramel.

If desired, wrap the apples in chopped nuts or simply eat them with the caramel covering alone; however, let the caramelized apples cool for 20 minutes before serving.

Tip: If kept chilled, they should last up to 2 or 3 weeks. Furthermore, if you are interested in more candies to make double the ingredients of the recipes.

Orange Peel Candy

Orange Peel Candy

Provitamin A, folic, riboflavin, thiamine, vitamin B6, and calcium are all abundant in orange peel. This candy is quite easy to make, requires only a few basic ingredients and about 45 minutes.

Materials You Will Need To Make Candied Orange Peel

  • Water
  • Sugar
  • Orange Peels

Instructions To Make Candied Orange Peel

Step 1: Slice orange peel into four vertical parts. Chop into 1/4-inch-wide strips with a 1/4-inch-wide strip cutter.

Step 2: In a big bowl of hot water, cook the peels for 15 minutes; drain and rinse.

Step 3: Bring three cups of sugar and three cups of water to a boil, stirring often to incorporate the sugar. After that, throw in the peels.

Step 4: Bring the water back to a simmer. Lower the heat and cook the peel for 45 minutes or until it is very soft.

Step 5: Spread a layer of sugar on parchment paper and toss the peel while adding an additional cup of sugar on top.

Step 6: Toss the peels in a bowl and set them aside to dry. Allow one to two days for the sugared orange peels to dry completely. Refrigerate for up to two months after wrapping.

Snow Candy From Maple Syrup

Snow Candy From Maple Syrup

Syrup made from maple trees. Snow candy is confectionery at its most basic level. Preparing maple candy or maple taffy is a common Canadian winter custom.

Materials You’ll Need To make Maple Syrup Snow

  • 1 Cup Maple Syrup (if you want more sweets, increase the quantity).
  • A candy-thermometer is required. The required temperature for a firm, crunchy candy is 245 degrees Fahrenheit.
  • The snow candy will be mushy and chewy if you don’t get it to that temperature.

Don’t just squirt maple syrup on the snow. It’ll disintegrate into the snow. It must be prepared.

Instructions To Make Maple Syrup Snow

Step 1: While stirring frequently, take the required amount of syrup to a boil in a pot over the intermediate heating.

Step 2: Take off the heat after five minutes if your candy thermometer reaches 245 degrees.

Step 3: Sprinkle the syrup over the snowflakes or crushed ice straight away and let it solidify for two or three minutes.

Step 4: Transfer to a serving plate and serve immediately or preserve for a future stage.

Tip: Although real maple syrup is preferred, store-bought syrup manufactured with corn syrup may suffice.

Mashed Potato Candy

They’re simple to make and a fantastic way to put surplus mashed potatoes to good use.

Materials You’ll Need To make Mashed Potato

  • 6 big potatoes (peeled and finely chopped into pieces)
  • 3 tablespoons sugar
  • 2 Tablespoons Vanilla extract
  • 1 package of 8-ounce pieces or 8-ounces crushed chocolate
  • 1 cup chopped nuts (option of nuts) (the pioneers used either roasted acorns or black walnuts).
  • 1 cup coconut flakes, shredded

Instructions To Make Mashed Potato

Step 1: Cut the potatoes into four pieces after peeling them.

Step 2: Until they are fork-tender, keep boiling the potatoes for about 20 to 30 minutes or more.

Step 3: Remove the potatoes from the water and mash them. Mash in the sugar and the 2 tablespoons of vanilla extract.

Step 4: Refrigerate the finished mash for 30 to 60 minutes.

Gently grease the bottom of a plate, then scoop up some mashed potatoes with your palms and form them into a ball the size of a medium-sized meatball in your palms.

Step 5: Refrigerate the oiled tray with the mashed potato dumplings for thirty min.

Step 6: It’s time to cut the nuts and create the chocolate coating while they’re freezing. Cut your nuts into the proportion you like.

Step 7: You’ll need a double boiler to prepare the chocolate glaze.

In a double boiler, melt the 8 ounces of chocolate chunks.

Step 8: Stir regularly until the mixture is smooth. Dip balls which were refrigerated potato in melted chocolate then rolled in peanuts or coconut.

Crab Apples Candy

The majority of crabapple types have a harsh acidic flavor that is sweet and sour in nature.

Crabapples are available in a range of hues, including red, orange, yellow, maroon, and green.

Materials You’ll Need To make Candied Crab

  • Unpeeled crab apples with stems
  • 2 sticks of cinnamon
  • Syrup prepared with 3 cups sugar and 4 cups water-dissolved over medium heat in a saucepan
  • 6 tbsp. red food coloring (optional)

Instructions To Make Candied Crab

Step 1: The crab apples should be washed and rinsed. Fill jars with cinnamon sticks.

Step 2: Bring to a boil the mixture over medium heat, stirring constantly.

Step 3: Reduce heat to simmer and add 1 cup crab apple juice or cider and add red food coloring. Cook until the mixture becomes thick.

Step 4: Dip apples in mixture and place on wax paper to cool.

Step 5: Roll apples in cinnamon sugar. Keep refrigerated until ready to serve.

Baked Apples

Because cooking might cause certain minerals to be destroyed, consuming apples raw is the best way to maintain their nutritional value.

Baked apples, on the other side, are a nutritious snack that may aid in the maintenance of your general health.

Materials You’ll Need To make Baked Apples

  • Butter
  • Cinnamon
  • 6 Apples (any variety)
  • Brown sugar
  • Cloves

Instructions To Make Baked Apples

Step 1: Simply cut off the apple’s central core with a melon baller or knife, removing the core and seeds. If you make a hole at the base of the apples, the filling will drain out.

Step 2: Insert a slice of butter into the core and sprinkle with cinnamon and cloves. Place the core on a prepared baking sheet and stuff it with brown sugar.

All of these processes may be completed with the assistance of the children.

Step 3: Heat the oven and bake the apples for 20 to 30 minutes, or until soft.

Step 4: Allow the apples to cool for 10 min before placing them in a bowl and slicing with a knife and fork.

Tip: Baked apples don’t store well and are best eaten fresh, but if you have any leftovers, they’ll last for approximately a week in the fridge.

Hard Taffy (Pulled Candy)

It’s so much fun to make pioneer sweets! Pioneers Day, a homeschooling class, a Very little Apartment on the Hill project, and much more call for hard-taffy and rock candy.

Materials You’ll Need To make Hard Taffy

  • 1/2 cups Water
  • 2 tbsp Butter
  • 1 cup Corn syrup (White)
  • 1 tsp Vanilla
  • 1 tsp Salt
  • 2 tsp Glycerin
  • 2 cups Sugar

Instructions To Make Hard Taffy

Step 1: In a large saucepan, combine the water, sugar, corn syrup, and cream of tartar. Stir to mix well. Place the saucepan over medium heat and stir constantly until the mixture boils.

Step 2: Clip a candy thermometer to the side of the pan and cook, without stirring, until the mixture reaches 260 degrees Fahrenheit. Add the flavoring and coloring (if using) and stir to combine.

Step 3: Grease two large baking sheets. Pour the syrup onto the prepared pans and allow to cool until it feels firm when gently pressed. This will take about 15 minutes.

Step 4: When the taffy is cool enough to handle, turn it out onto a floured surface and separate into small balls.

Step 5: With buttered hands, start pulling and twisting the taffy into a desired thickness. Let cool completely before wrapping or eating.

Old Fashioned Rock Candy

This is an ancient family recipe from my youth. Most individuals recall cutting this candy with their moms and grandmothers as a child.

I’ve passed it on and am now putting it here so that everyone may partake in this beloved Christmas tradition!

Materials To Make Old Fashioned Rock Candy

  • 2 Cups Granulated Sugar
  • 1 Quart of Water
  • Cup Corn Syrup
  • Teaspoon Extract of Peppermint
  • 1 Red Food Coloring Drop
  • Quarter-Cup of Confectioners’ Sugar

Instructions To Make Old Fashioned Rock Candy

Step 1: Cook sugar, water, and corn syrup over medium-high heat to 290 degrees.

Step 2: Add teaspoon extract of peppermint and red food coloring drop. Stir and cook. Heat to 300 degrees mixing thoroughly.

Step 3: Pour onto a greased baking sheet. I used wax paper instead of the cooking spray and it worked well.

Please be very careful at this stage. You definitely do not want to touch the hot candy syrup. As the syrup cools, it will form a sheet of candy.

Step 4: Break up the sheet into chunks and stick your popsicle sticks or lollipop sticks in there however you can. The candy is still very gooey at this point so just try to get the sticks in somewhat straight.

Step 5: This syrup makes a lot of rock candy crystals. Once you pour the syrup onto your baking sheet, it will start to cool quickly and form into a solid mass.

Warning

Several of these recipes call for heating water and sugar to a high temperature. That is dangerous. Keep your kids away from any part of the water or sugar-boiling process.
